Design Studies 02

This semester’s Design Studies’ assignments were a lot more fun, more to what I love, or at least, preferred to do.

To some, I know creating or developing a logo is a really simple thing to do.

But the process of this assignment was rather long.

Firstly, we had to walk around our entire Limkokwing campus, and sketch really quickly 20 different nature subjects that we see. Like leaves, flowers, roots, whatever.

We were only given about 30mins, to SEARCH for nice nature subjects, and SKETCH them down. Mind you, the sketches weren’t in scribbles, they actually had to be more or less quite detailed.

Hmmm…

Okay fine. So after the sketching, the lecturer picks a few, like 3-5 out of those 20 sketches, which they find have potential to be developed and modified into logos.

I settled down with my look-alike-clover petal sketch, and developed them into 20 different logo shapes/types.

The lecturer picks the best out of the 20, and there again, develop another 10 from there.

And finally, the final design of the logo is picked, BUT we’re still not done yet. We have to do develop them into different colour schemes, and see which suits best.

And obviously, I wouldn’t be stupid enough to choose coloured inks, because we cannot be printing our logos out, we would have to COLOUR them. And coloured inks on A4 will only create patchy ugly uneven outcomes.

So that’s my logo up there. Long process aye.

Okay next.

This is by far one of my favourite paintings so far.

This process is much shorter. Less rules, less whatsoever. But much more effort.

In this Colour Mode Assignment, we were asked to go home and draw an illustration or any graphic pictures, well they even accepted cartoon pictures. We were allowed to print the illustration/graphic out, and trace it to cartridge paper. Well only because this is a colour mode assignment, so I suppose drawing isn’t being tested much on.

I was never quite a fan of anime, though quite a number of my classmates did choose anime as their illustration. One even chose powerpuff girls, and the other, Pokemon.

Hmmm…

I really had no idea what to choose. So I ended up drawing my own illustration as shown above.

Once our illustrations are approved, the lecturer will give us a theme to base on when we colour/paint our work.

Sooooo, my lecturer was mean enough to make things difficult for me on purpose by giving me a theme on “Trapped in a Lift”.

It was obvious my hand-drawn illustration was targetting towards bright vivid colours, and I knew he could tell. But he refused to be kind, and hence the difficult theme.

However, after much time spent on deciding on colours, I managed to pull through and painted the above illustration based on the theme given. I handed up my work. My lecturer didn’t have much to say. I asked if I did it correctly. He nodded and said well done there.

I was happy. Worth all my effort after all.

Okay this typography assignment was actually firstly based on an article that we choose which has a Headline. Clearly, the article I chose was from a women’s Magazine, Cleo to be specific.

So from our headlines chosen, like “Deadly Spending Sins”. We had to draw many many sketches of suitable typefaces and alignments for our headlines. We weren’t allowed to draw using references of existing typefaces.. so yeah, that was one of the hardest part I guess.

After our design and alignment of words are approved, we then have to search for typefaces which looks most similar to the ones we drew in our design.

Then we had to trace and modify according to our designs.. and complete it on our final artwork. This assignment wasn’t hard at all, maybe because I love typography. However, it is a very very precised assignment.
.
.

And the other assignments or artworks for my Design Studies 02 are basically on my integrated project already. So… that’s about all.

I’m currently painting on my 2ft X 2ft canvas, roughly the same illustration I painted on the cartridge paper above. Hehee :)

I think I’ll post on my Life Drawing assignments next, though I know only to create more humiliation and embarassment to myself. Hahaha
.
.

Yours truly,
Cheryl, back to painting. yay!
